Reporter: The GETRAG Group is a world-renowned independent transmission manufacturer, but it is still relatively unfamiliar with the Chinese automotive industry. How does the visit feel about the current status of application of transmissions in China?
GETRAK: We are very happy to be interviewed by China's most authoritative automotive media. This trip to China has been very fruitful. Some auto companies in China have not known much about us in the past, but they have shown great interest in and cooperation with our product technology through contact. Frankly speaking, there are many transmission manufacturers in China, but the technical and technological level of most products may not be able to meet the development requirements of the future automobile industry, and most of them are MT manual transmissions, and AT products are mostly imported. However, we have also seen some new technologies and products. I believe it is only a matter of time before we catch up.
Reporter: I was fortunate enough to test drive the European version of the carnival with your company's automated mechanical shift transmission (AMT). Its combination of manual and automatic control shifts left a deep impression on me. It is understood that AMT has been adopted on more and more European models. Compared with manual MT, automatic AT, and continuously variable transmission (CVT), what are the advantages of AMT?
GETRAK: The AMT transmission was first introduced by the GETRAG Group in the world. The first generation of products was introduced in Europe in 1996. We have been improving the performance of the first generation of products. The second generation of products has just been put into production. Currently used in single and double row seats and sporty Smart, BMW M3, Ford Fiesta and Ford Transit models, this year's production will reach 200,000 units.
Our latest AMT technology is as comfortable as AT. Compared with AT, the main advantage of AMT is a low fuel consumption rate of approximately 17%. At the same time, the emissions are also relatively low, the system's purchase and maintenance costs are low, and it can bring manual and automatic driving pleasure.
We invited domestic R&D personnel and consumers from domestic automakers to test drive the AMT European Carnival from Germany. They are very excited about this technology. As for the preferences and requirements of AMT, we think that AMT products are more suitable for the Chinese market than European markets, and Chinese consumers are eager for new things or more advanced technologies. This is also the reason why we will bring the latest AMT technology to China.
Reporter: Since GETRAG's AMT technology has so many advantages, is it somewhat late to enter China now? Is there a specific plan for local production? Will China introduce technology that is synchronized with the world?
GETRAK: There is an old saying in China that "it's better to come than before." We are pleased to see that China has developed into a very important automobile market, and the demand for high-quality products is constantly growing.
A correct entry schedule is crucial to our strategy. The timetable must be combined with product and capacity. If you are well prepared to enter a market, it may be easier to succeed than just focusing on the timetable.
Actually, GETRAG products have already entered the market through models that are produced in China and imported into China, such as Carnival, Transit, Cadillac CTS, etc.
Our latest 6-speed manual transmission and AMT technology can provide comfortable driving methods on the one hand, and on the other hand, it can contribute significantly to reducing fuel consumption and contribute to reducing emission pollution. It is believed that it will be able to resonate with Chinese users.
In order to provide Chinese auto factories with fast and adaptable services, to approach the Chinese market and understand the needs of consumers, we will soon carry out local production in China. We look forward to the establishment of a flexible and high-quality production plant, and provide technical support for matching design, testing and other engineering in the country. The first step in reflecting localization goals was the establishment of a representative office in Beijing in March 2003.
Reporter: How do you see the development trend of various transmission technologies in Europe and globally? How much do you know about Chinese automakers and consumers? China's automakers need low-cost products, while consumers pursue comfort and fuel economy. How can this demand be balanced?
GETRAK: With regard to the development trend of the transmission, we believe that the demand in the European market will shift from the manual transmission MT, which today accounts for the majority, to AMT, mechanical clutch transmissions (DCT) with dual clutches and other automatic transmissions, including hybrid systems. The main goal is to address emissions and environmental issues. The CVT's performance and certain properties are not favored by Europeans. The result of the balance is that CVT is not the best choice.
We expect that by 2010, European manual transmissions will drop to about 50% market share, AMT and DCT will reach about 25%, and 6-speed and 7-speed automatic transmissions will also grow faster.
We believe that China has similar external environmental constraints as Europe, and that China will also have transmission development trends similar to those in Europe. It is only a matter of time.
Regarding the characteristics of Chinese automakers' needs, as you said, we are also strongly aware that Chinese users are sensitive to prices while pursuing high quality. In order to meet the user's requirements for quality, we have improved the product's adaptability through a large amount of research and development support for the user, so that the product achieves the best combination of vibration, noise, shift quality, fuel economy, and emissions. If there is a demand from the user, we will also support the matching of the transmission.
Our goal is to provide users with high quality and competitively priced products and services by implementing a product family concept and localized production.
Reporter: At present, the automatic transmission AT and CVT are welcomed in China. What new concept does AMT bring to the Chinese transmission market?
GETRAK: During my visit to China, I saw Chinese taxi drivers shift frequently, shifting gears almost all of the time, and the wear of clutches is very serious. AMT can provide solutions that balance various needs. To solve the problems of frequent shifts, high fuel consumption, and clutch wear, the life of AMT clutches is lifetime. Based on the market demand, we will start with the introduction of some high-performance manual transmissions first, followed by the introduction of the latest technology AMT. In accordance with the shifting habits and preferences of Chinese users, matching cars are designed to allow Chinese consumers to experience the multiple advantages of AMT in terms of fuel economy, low cost, and comfort.
