Mixer - Dongfeng Hercules Mixer Active Safety System can improve traffic safety
On June 26, 2013, Gothenburg, Sweden, the EuroFOT project has been going on for nearly four years. The project has a total of 28 partner participants representing the EU to conduct research on systems that help car and truck drivers detect risks, prevent accidents and improve driving efficiency.
Volvo Trucks, part of the Swedish team, participated in the study with Volvo Car Corporation and Chalmers University of Technology.
“Our part of the project studied 30 trucks operated by DHL Tradeteam in the United Kingdom and Nijhof Wassink in the Netherlands. We tested the effectiveness of the three systems: adaptive cruise system, forward collision warning system and lane keeping system.†Volvo Karsten Heinig, Truck Party Project Manager, said.
The adaptive cruise system (ACC) and the forward collision warning system (FCW) act simultaneously to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front to avoid rear-end collisions. Studies have shown that when trucks equipped with the above system are driving on the highway, the number of rear-end collisions is reduced by up to 15%. The study also found that this data has considerable potential for improvement.
"The system uses less than half of the driving time on average. If you increase the use time, you can further reduce the accident. We reduced the guidance and training of the driver during the test. In the user-friendliness of the system, we have some technologies. The scope of work needs to be done.†Karsten Heinig, Volvo Truck Manager, said.
As for the lane keeping system (LKS), since the statistical basis is too small, no reliable conclusion on accident prevention can be drawn. However, it has been proven that this system does help drivers to keep lanes on the road more steadily. ACC, FCW, and LKS do not have any negative impact on the driving behavior of the driver. “We are sometimes asked if we are concerned that these systems will interfere with drivers or distract them from driving. However, analysis of euroFOT data did not show this effect,†said Castenheinig.
In the study, each truck was equipped with five cameras: one facing forward, shooting the driver’s field of vision in the direction of the vehicle; one shooting the blind spot on the side of the copilot; one shooting the right foot of the driver; and one fixed on the A-pillar. , shooting the driver's driving behavior; one is facing the driver's face, recording the driver's eye activity.
Combining data from truck ECUs, including parameters such as current speed, the data captured by the camera provides a total of approximately 70TB (1TB = 1000 GB) of data. There are 4 million kilometers of truck data available for analysis, and another 4 million kilometers of system data output by Chalmers University of Technology. These data will be provided to the academic community for reference.
"These materials can be used as a rich source of resources for the development of safer roads," said Castenheinig.
