China's first large-scale coal chemical demonstration project for the production of polypropylene from coal as raw material—the construction of the MTP plant for Shenhua Ningxia Coal Group has progressed smoothly. Currently, the first set of equipment for this project has an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons of methanol. 10,000 tons of dimethyl ether plant has been built and entered the test phase.
According to Wang Huan, general manager of Shenhua Ningmei Coal Group, the MTP project of Shenhua Ningmei Coal Group started at the end of 2005, with a total investment of approximately RMB 17 billion. It is expected that the entire line will be put into operation in 2009. After production, it can produce 1.67 million tons of intermediate products of methanol, 500,000 tons of final product polypropylene, 188,800 tons of by-product gasoline, 41,200 tons of liquid fuel, and 13,800 tons of sulfur. At present, the first set of 250,000 tons of methanol to support the preparation of 210,000 tons of dimethyl ether has been completed and put into trial production.
MTP is a process route for producing propylene from dehydration of methanol and dimethyl ether using coal as raw material. It is currently the most mature and economical production technology for producing propylene from alternative petroleum routes. As the middle products of MTP projects are currently marketed on the market, the MTP project of Shenhua Ningmei Group adopts the construction mode of “completed, put into operation, and set up profits†to maximize the benefits of the company.
It is understood that the development of coal chemical industry in Ningxia, in addition to its own advantages in coal resources, but also depends on the local abundant water resources, relying on the advantages of the Yellow River water resources, Ningdong coal chemical base total water supply capacity will eventually reach 360 million cubic meters per year.
